Tierney Sutton - DesireTierney Sutton Band: Tierney Sutton (vocals); Christian Jacob (piano); Trey Henry, Kevin Axt (bass); Ray Brinker (drums). Personnel: Tierney Sutton (vocals); Christian Jacob (piano); Trey Henry, Kevin Axt (bass guitar); Ray Brinker (drums). Although
DESIRE is composed almost exclusively of well-known jazz standards, the
fine singer Tierney Sutton and her Band, including the crack pianist
Christian Jacob and drummer Ray Brinker, breathe new life into old
chestnuts like "It's Only A Paper Moon" and "Skylark" with freshly
conceived contemporary jazz arrangements that don't overwhelm with
flashy, contemporary-jazz virtuosity. Sporting a clean virtuosity all
her own, Sutton is an intelligent, discerning singer with a knack for
hitting just the right note in the right place. She goes Peggy Lee one
better by treating "Fever" to an even more rockish beat while the dual
bass team of Trey Henry and Kevin Axt wax and wane behind her.
Likewise, Sutton expands Julie London's "Cry Me A River" in an extended
waltz treatment, allowing her super-fluent pianist to stretch out in
McCoy Tyner-esque fashion. DESIRE manages to be sound thoroughly
contemporary without sacrificing the supple feel and musicianship of
jazz at its best. |
