Ted Vining Trio - Number 1Another classic Australian jazz reissue from Birdland and Basement Digs.
From 1977 this 7 track Trio cd (with Brian Brown ( sax ) on 2 tracks features the late Barry Buckley (bass) and Bob Sedergreen (piano) as well as the irepressible Ted on drums. A bona-fide classic. One of the greatest albums from Australia's Ted Vining Trio -- a group led by drummer Vining,
and augmented here with some great work on tenor sax from legendary
bopper Brian Brown! The group represent the sound of 70s Aussie jazz at
its hippest -- exploratory, and very much in a post-Coltrane mode --
but also somehow hanging onto a tighter groove at times too, one that
rolls out with modal energy on the record's best tracks! The
keyboardist here is Bob Sedergreen -- who plays both acoustic and
electric piano on the record -- and the whole album's got a really
sharp-edged quality that keeps things interesting throughout! Titles
include great versions of Coltrane's "Naima" and "Impressions", plus
original numbers "Freedom Rider", "Digger's Rest", "Theme For Horst",
and "Number One".
