Dale Barlow, George Coleman, Mark Fitzgibbon & Sam Anning - Treat Me GentlyAt his best Sydney saxophonist Dale Barlow sounds like he's just casually sauntering along while soloing, such is the aura of ease exuded, even at fast tempos. That is the feeling throughout this album from the post-bop mainstream, which possibly reflects the comfort zone provided by some long-term collaborators: Melbourne's Mark Fitzgibbon and Sam Anning on piano and bass, and American drummer George Coleman. Coleman and Anning were the only two to not share an extensive playing history prior to this recording, but you'd never pick it. Their grooves are as cohesive as they are flexible, allowing Fitzgibbon's effervescent lyricism to shine alongside the burly sound and loping ideas of Barlow's tenor saxophone.
