with Keg Johnson, Tommy Flanagan, George Duvivier, Charlie Persip

This is a glorious statement from the middle period of the incredible 55-year career of Albert "Budd" Johnson (1910-1984). One of the earliest Texas tenors, straw boss of the Earl Hines Grand Terrace Orchestra, and pivotal swing-to-bop figure. Johnson was gaining renewed attention in the reed sections of the Quincy Jones and Gil Evans bands when he taped this loose blowing session that still manages to convey his skills as an organizer. The quintet features brother Keg Johnson’s trombone in the front line and an impressive Tommy Flanagan/George Duvivier/Charlie Persip rhythm section. 1960 was a very good year for Johnson, who had only recently cut the great Four Brass Giants album for Riverside.
