A tight, responsive trio devoted to sonic clarity. Anchored by the deep groove of Michelangelo Scandroglio on bass and lifted by the dynamic pulse of Jeff Ballard on drums, Zampini unfolds a broad palette of clean-toned possibilities, using just a trace of reverb to open up space and let every melodic and harmonic extension breathe. The Tuscan guitarist does not imitate Bill Frisell, Umberto Fiorentino, or John Abercrombie – names that suggest the album’s general atmosphere – but has absorbed their lessons so thoroughly that what emerges is a distinctly personal improvisational voice.
At times he shapes his embellishments through pull-offs and flowing legato; at others he reveals the horizontal expanse of the fretboard. His virtuosity, never paraded, remains wholly at the service of the cantabile line, even when the melodies drift through dissonances and clusters. As the great masters have long reminded us, when difficulty appears effortless, true mastery is at work. Long phrases, pauses, pedals, and obbligatos unfold with rare coherence, in music that feels at once perfectly transcribable and quietly ineffable.
A trio album of rare transparency and taste — Zampini emerges as a guitar voice to watch.
