There are a few important reasons why some jazz musicians are happy to do without bass and drums from time to time: the combination of guitar, clarinet, and saxophone, in particular, offers plenty of sonic possibilities. Bass lines are still present, and the percussive element is not neglected thanks to various playing techniques. Most importantly, there’s plenty of space, which Geoff Goodman, Matthieu Bordenave, and Rudi Mahall are able to fill with grounded material and brazenly self-authorized freedom. Anyone who thinks they’re in for a feel-good, standard jazz relaxation evening is barking up the wrong tree. Despite—or perhaps because of—the beauty of the traditional material, the instruments are played to their outer limits.
