The Bethlehem Sessions, 'Love, Gloom, Cash, Love', is the last album by American jazz pianist Herbie Nichols, featuring Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond and bassist George Duvivier. Nichols covers two standards, "Too Close For Comfort" and "All The Way", which helps the listener understand him as a player and arranger as opposed to a composer. Richmond's characteristic bombast and humor are kept in check here. With the drummer maintaining straight, subdued rhythms, Nichols' complex melodies and solos shine that much brighter, especially on such standout originals as the album's title track, "Beyond Recall," and "S'Crazy Pad."
