Houston Person - From The Heart

Few artists interpret a song like Houston Person. Across more than six decades, the legendary tenor saxophonist has earned his reputation not through virtuosity alone, but through an extraordinary gift for revealing the emotional heart of a melody. Every phrase is purposeful, every note speaks, and every performance reflects the warmth, soul and unmistakable sound that have made him one of jazz's most enduring voices. Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, this collection celebrates the Great American Songbook through a carefully chosen program of standards, blues and jazz classics.

From the opening 'Wish You Were Here' to Duke Ellington favorites including 'Satin Doll,' 'Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me' and 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore,' Houston balances familiar repertoire with overlooked gems, revealing fresh dimensions in songs that have stood the test of time. Joined by Eddie Allen (trumpet), John Di Martino (piano), James Chirillo (guitar), Sean Smith (bass) and Vincent Ector (drums), Person varies the instrumentation from track to track, giving each performance its own character.

Whether leading the full ensemble or performing in more intimate settings, the musicians share an effortless chemistry that allows every melody room to breathe. At the heart of the album is Houston Person's enduring musical philosophy: the song always comes first. His improvisations never lose sight of the melody, honoring each composer while adding the wisdom, sensitivity and quiet confidence of a lifetime in jazz. Warm, soulful and deeply expressive, this recording is a celebration of timeless songwriting and inspired musicianship. It is another masterful chapter from an artist who continues to remind us that the greatest performances are built not on complexity, but on honesty, swing and the enduring power of a beautiful melody.
