Trumpeter Josh Lawrence returns with “Still We Dream”, his seventh release for the ever-consistent Posi-Tone label. This time, Lawrence takes on the formidable task of reimagining the music of Thelonious Monk and Frédéric Chopin – two giants from strikingly different musical worlds. What unfolds is a sincere and steady effort that aims high, fusing classical architecture with modern jazz sensibilities.
There’s no question that Lawrence is surrounded by a decent lineup. Diego Rivera’s tenor saxophone brings a warm, full-bodied tone that balances well with Lawrence’s more pointed trumpet style. Art Hirahara, always a player of finesse, contributes sensitive and well-placed accompaniment on piano, while Boris Kozlov and Rudy Royston keep things grounded in a solid rhythmic foundation.
Throughout the whole recording, “Still We Dream” presents itself with confidence. Tracks move along with a certain inevitability, each solo well-structured and played with purpose. There’s a clear affection for the material that really shines through, especially Monk’s angular lines and Chopin’s romanticism, but while the interpretations are respectful, they rarely surprise or challenge the listener in unexpected ways.
