An old-fashioned jazz album, recorded spontaneously and without too much thought. A session dedicated to the pleasure of meeting and playing together, with most of the tracks on the set list recorded in one take. This reissue of this “Duo "Bones” brings us an ancient joy that is increasingly rare today.
The album captures the meeting—which took place in Rome in 1979—between two masters of post-bop trombone: Kai Winding and Dino Piana. The former was an extraordinary stylist, who went down in history above all (but not only) for his refined duets with his African-American colleague J.J. Johnson, a true innovator; the latter was not only a virtuoso of the valve trombone but also a founding figure of Italian jazz. The success of the project is also due to a five-star rhythm section, which featured the best of Italian music at the time: Giovanni Tommaso, who had put his jazz-rock experiments with Perigeo behind him; Tullio De Piscopo, an overwhelming groove machine; and finally a young but already extraordinary Enrico Pieranunzi.
