In 1992, Paul McCandless released Premonition, produced by bassist Steve Rodby. The album featured Lyle Mays on piano, Fred Simon on keyboards, and Mark Walker on drums. That same outstanding crew performed nine concerts that summer, beginning with an appearance on July 4 at the Montreal Jazz Festival and concluding with a three-night engagement from August 21 to 23 at Kimball's East in the San Francisco Bay Area. A DAT tape of their Kimball's East performance sat in McCandless's home archives for decades before being discovered recently.
Co-producer Jon Krosnick, whose San Francisco-based band, Charged Particles, toured extensively with McCandless from 2015 to 2019, said: "One day, I was at Paul's house, sorting through material to build his website. He climbed a ladder up to a little storage area in the garage. That's where he found a tape that wasn't well-marked. I brought it home, played it, and immediately thought, 'We've got to release this.'
Sonically improved by Rodby and fellow bassist, producer, and recording engineer Dan Feiszli using cutting-edge, AI-driven mixing technology, Live at Kimball's East 1992 now stands as a professional-grade document of the group's rare chemistry in concert. 'My relationship with Paul, this music, and these memories are very precious to me,' said Rodby. "It's a joy to revisit it all."
