1989 CD reissue.
Richard Williams represented all the very finest qualities in a musician. When he made this album in 1960, he had already worked with leaders such as Mingus and Gigi Gryce then, he went on to play in the big bands of Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Duke Ellington and Orchestra USA. His superb musicianship meant he was a player very much in demand. Gill Evans employed him on a number of occasions as had Clark Terry.
A trumpet concerto was specially written for him and he spent a number of years working on the Continent. This album also presents Leo Wright on alto sax and flute, Richard Wyands on piano, Reginald Workman on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums. The Williams/Wright partnership sets this album in a special category for it catches two important young men at the threshold of their careers.
