Australian pianist Sean Wayland grew up studying the music of Debussy and Messiaen and listening avidly to Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea records.
It's no wonder an introspective presence dominates Colossus of Rhodes. Wayland and cohorts bassist Matt Penman and drummer Jochen Rueckert stretch out on eight original compositions completed by a nice, but unspectacular, version of "Bye, Bye, Blackbird." The disc's final cut, "Indigo Mood," is a highlight that adds Jesse Harris on guitar with Wayland overdubbing himself on Hammond organ. As a matter of fact, the disc's title was designed in part as a tribute to the late Harold Rhodes, inventor of the Fender Rhodes piano. While Wayland's prior discs have been difficult to locate in the states, this Japanese import on the DIW label should be slightly easier to find.
