REVIEW OF One Tuesday In New York
Alright, let's get into this. One Tuesday In New York by Takashi Mizuhashi & Herbie Hancock is a 1977 jazz joint that kinda flew under the radar, but damn, it’s got some fire on it. recorded in NYC, released in Japan by Denon Jazz, this vinyl LP got that smooth, late-70s vibe with a side of fusion and straight-up jazz grooves. first off, Herbie Hancock on piano and electric piano? yeah, no surprise he’s the star here. his playing is tight, moody, and sometimes funky as hell. track like "Cantaloupe Island" hits with that familiar Hancock groove, but it feels stretched out, more jam-session than studio track. i like that — gives it a raw edge.
Takashi Mizuhashi on bass brings that Japanese jazz flavor, which is cool. he ain’t showin off, just laying down solid lines that keep the whole thing grounded. Bruno Carr on drums also deserves props — steady, never overdoing it, but still got that NYC hustle in the pocket. now, the tracklist? five tracks, all decent length. "Samba De Negrito" clocks in at over 10 minutes and honestly? it’s the highlight. slow build, some serious solo action, and that rhythm section just keeps it rolling. perfect for late-night spins or when you wanna pretend you’re in a smoky jazz club that closed in 1979. but listen — not perfect. some tracks feel like they lose focus. "Reaching To The Sun" starts strong but kinda drifts off halfway through. feels like they were vibing too hard and forgot to bring the hook back. and while the production is crisp, it’s a bit too clean at times. i wanted more grit, more rawness — this is NYC in the 70s, not a sterile lab. album art? classic jazz vinyl — moody photo, simple fonts. liner notes are in Japanese, which is cool if you dig that authenticity, but maybe a letdown if you want context and can’t read kanji. overall, this one’s a sleeper hit. not talked about enough, but if you dig Hancock’s 70s work or Japanese jazz fusion, this is a must-spin. i didn’t expect much, but damn, this album made me wanna dig deeper into Mizuhashi’s catalog. who knew a session from one tuesday in feb ‘77 would still slap 50 years later?
