By 1965, Stan Getz was at the top of his game. Along with his Brazilian counterpart Joao Gilberto, Getz had helped globalise the bossa nova craze with the hit LP 'Getz/Gilberto' - a record that won 'Album of the Year' at the Grammys.

In fact, his acclaim as a bossa nova pioneer during this period overshadowed his career as a bebop saxophonist, leading Verve Records to delay subsequent Getz jazz releases out of fear they would distract from his new-found popularity as a superstar.

However, the British invasion was already underway, and rock n' roll quickly dethroned bossa nova as the new thing.

But that didn't deter Getz. He'd already been a first call tenor player in jazz circles since the 1940s, and he quickly found his step again as a trend-setter in jazz circles. Aiding Getz's good form during the mid '60s was a fresh-faced vibes player who had joined the saxophonist's quartet. His name was Gary Burton, and he added a new layer of depth to Stan's sound with his textural approach to the vibraphone. Rounding out the ensemble was another emerging name on bass - Steve Swallow - and finally, on the drums... Mr. Snap Crackle himself: Roy Haynes - a veteran of the bop era who - like Getz - continually reinvented himself.

Armed with one of the most expressive bands of this mid '60s era, Stan Getz set out on tour. The saxophonist had already built up a big audience in Europe, having lived there for a time in the 1950s - and when they arrived in Paris, they played the famous Salle Pleyel to a sold-out crowd. Thankfully, this famous concert was recorded and released as an LP - the only album to feature this iteration of the Getz band.
