Hidefumi Toki - Sky View - Vinyl LP
Japanese Import - Limited Edition
2026
The scent of fresh, budding greenery rises. A fresh and beautiful narrative, woven by a young Hidefumi Toki in a one-horn quartet setting.
Turning professional while still in high school, Hidefumi Toki went on to perform with groups led by the likes of New Herd, Isao Suzuki, Terumasa Hino, Ryo Kawasaki, and Fumio Itabashi. From the late 1970s, he collaborated with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Tatsuro Yamashita, playing an active role across the Japanese music scene—spanning jazz, fusion, and pop. This release, recorded in 1976, marks his third album, following *Toki* and *Lover Man* (a co-led project with Yoshio Otomo). It is filled with dazzling masterpieces and brilliant performances, including "Sky View"—where his expansive saxophone playing shines against a delicate melodic backdrop—and "Let's Get Together," a track that evokes the very scent of fresh, new foliage. The backing support from Mikio Masuda (who also contributed compositions), Yoshio Ikeda, and Steve Jackson is superb. With its gentle perspective and refined, vibrant playing, this is a masterpiece that captures the full charm of a young Hidefumi Toki.
